The World Universities Debating Championships is held annually in a University selected by the World Universities Debating Council. In recent years the Championships has taken place in Bangkok, Thailand and in Vancouver, Canada. The 2009 Championships will take place in Cork. The Championships will see over 1000 delegates from over 40 countries compete over 8 days to be crowned World Champions 2009. The event is the largest academic competition in the World and will be one of the largest conference events to be held in Ireland in 2008/09. The Championships will take place over the New Year period of 2008/09. Throughout the course of the Championships delegates will take part in nine preliminary rounds of debating, before the top 32 teams enter the knock out phase culminating in the Grand Final on January 3rd in Cork
